Design 2009: Trends, Styles and Predictions

Posted on 08. Sep, 2009 by Taiyab in Design Trends

As we head swiftly through the year towards the last quarter, we’ve experienced many changes in design practices and styles which have had time to mature and spread throughout the web. Some practices a tad odd, whilst others a simple “improvement” on the last. Let’s take a look at some of the common design practices that have emerged in 2009.

Typography

Dominant, Focal Text

With image at the forefront of designers’ minds, we’re starting to see widespread use of large, focal text above the fold of designs, slap-bang in the center. They prove to make a powerful, bold statement, and using this technique is great for setting up your image and brand with an underlying philosophy to show depth in your website or business.

Georgia, Georgia, Georgia

Georgia seems to be becoming the font for, well, everything. It’s becoming widely used for standard content text, titles – even entire sites. It actually seems to pull off being used at size 12px as standard text font pretty well if you ask me.

Calligraphic Logo Fonts

More and more I come across designs which feature a calligraphic style of font in the logo (and almost no where else on the site). It attempts to bring about a sense of character to the company and site, and I personally think it works well when used properly.

Layout

Focal, Large(r) Galleries

This is a trend particularly established by web application and portfolio websites where the center of attention of the website are either application screen-shots or design work previews. We’ve seen some of this in past years, but it they seem to have grown in size since then.

One-Pagers 2.0

Yes, we’ve seen one-pagers for the entire duration of last year, but this time they’re not only on portfolio designs. They’ve evolved and manifested to every crevice and dark corner of the web. Hey, they seem to cut-down coding time, so all the better.

Colors

Vivid and Strong

Designers are definitely becoming more brave and “out-of-the-box” thinkers, and are leading the way for a more innovative and fresh-thinking society. One of the points that this new surge of creativity is apparent is in the more vivid and strong use of colors to establish both mood and message of a website.

New Concoctions

As designers continue to strive to be as creative as possible, we’ve seen some new color combination and mixtures that haven’t been too common on the web.

Predictions

It’s always hard to make predictions when it comes to design, but I feel design is currently headed in the right direction as designers are actually discovering new ways to make the message behind the website count more, rather than use design just to make things pretty. I expect colors to be used in more weirder and wonderful ways and for design to become more or less free of “old-fashioned” layout restraints.

I love the one-pager direction, the large and loud type and the bravest-use-yet of color…. and may your future predictions come true for all of us.

I’m more of a coder than a design but I still do some. I’ve participated in these trends myself this and last year. I really like the use one pagers, big focal images and big text all together.
